Court decisions are recorded in sets of books called reporters and are available online. When citing decisions, the references entry should include the name of the case, legal citation (including the volume, reporter, and page), jurisdiction, date, and URL. If no page number has been assigned, use three underscore marks where the page number should appear.
Use of italics for names of cases: Names of cases appear in italics when mentioned in the text of the paper (including headings and in-text citations), but in standard type on the References list.
There will be some variation depending on the type of court issuing the decision, but the basic format is as follows:
The References entry will look like this:
Name v. Name, Volume Reporter Page (Court Year), URL.
The parenthetical citation will look like this:
(Name v. Name, Year)
The narrative citation will look like this:
Name v. Name (Year)
