Journal articles about original research studies have a standardized format. Learn about the parts and what information they contain.

Introduction

Introduction = Rationale and Goals

The introduction comes after the abstract.  It is usually labeled with the heading Introduction and includes everything up until the section labeled Methods. It usually includes a review of other literature from the field on that topic to show how this study fits in with others done previously.

Introduction Diagram

Provides the rationale for the study and includes information about and citations for previous related studies.
