Using Sources in a Paper: Paraphrasing

What Is a Paraphrase?

A paraphrase is a detailed restatement of information from a source, differing from the original in both wording and phrasing.

Benefits of Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing enables you to:

  • Weave the information into your own writing and present it in your own style
  • Demonstrate your comprehension of the material
  • Insert analysis of the material
  • Make connections between the material and your ideas or material from other sources

How to Paraphrase

When paraphrasing source information, remember to:

  • Cite the source according to the citation style required by your instructor
  • Put the information in your own words, using your own sentence style and phrasing
  • Blend with short (one or two words) direct quotes if necessary
