Agroecology: Scientific Research

Getting Started

In class, you will be asked to select an agroecology topic that interests you and design an experimental research project around it. Maybe you will test the effect of various soil additives on water retention, or design an experiment to measure the optimal amount of organic fertilizer.

Whatever your topic, you will need to...

  1. Understand the purpose and structure of scientific articles, and
  2. Perform a literature review to gain the necessary background knowledge to design your own study.

Scientific Research

Question: How do scientific researchers share information?

Answer: Through peer-reviewed research articles.

Scientific research articles are sometimes also called "primary" or "original" research articles. They describe the scientists' own research, an experiment they performed themselves. Original research articles will have a methods / methodology / material & methods section that explains exactly how they tested and measured everything.
