English 1010 Research Guide: Home

This guide is intended to help students in ENGL 1010 identify and learn how to get started using library databases for academic research. The library catalog and some of our most popular multidisciplinary databases are covered.

Congratulations! You've made it to the library, or at least our webpage, but what now?

When faced with the prospect of library research, many students' first hurdle is figuring out where to start when there are so many resources at their disposal.  It seems easier and faster to just go to Google, but what do you do if your instructor has said that you can't use the web for all your research?  Don't panic!  We are here to help you.

Getting Started

Library Cards

Your student ID also works as your library card. A library card allows you to:

  • Check out books, magazines, and videos for use outside the library
  • Check out items on Reserve, even if they will only be used inside the library
  • Login to your library account to renew materials, check due dates and fines
  • Login to request items to be sent from another library (Interlibrary Loan)

Library cards from other Wyoming public libraries are honored here, but be aware that if you place an Interlibrary Loan request, the item must be sent to the library that issued the card and will not be sent here unless you have an LCCC card.

Using Wikipedia for Research

Many of your instructors will have reservations about letting you use Wikipedia for your research and some may let you use it as long as you don't rely on it exclusively.  Here in the library we are not Wikipedia haters, but we do think there are some issues students need to be aware of when using this resource.  For a humorous look at the situation, check out the following video clip :
