Finding Statistics

Use the links to the right to find many common statistics.

Here are some other tips to remember:

- try using the Google to limit your search to specific domains

example: seat belt usage site:.gov

note that there is no space between site: and .gov

you can also limit to more specific domains

example: autism site:cdc.gov

- try to match the type of statistics you are looking for to the agency that would be most interested in that data

example: National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) or IPEDS for educational data, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for data on traffic accidents, etc

A Census Bureau source for population, housing, economic, and geographic data
Statistical Abstract of the United States
Published by the Census Bureau until 2012, the online version has the ability to download many of their statistical tables in Excel or PDF formats. There is a search feature, but the Browse feature may be easier to navigate.
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
Covers all education, from early childhood through post-secondary.
Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)
Data on colleges, universities, and technical and vocational postsecondary institutions in the United States
Bureau of Justice Statistics
United Nations Statistical Division
For global statistical information

While not specifically statistical, the easy way that this database separates out statistical information in its own category in the results list makes it a good place to check for statistics on your topic.
